First Dog Up Mount Everest

These amazing picture emerged today, via Caters News Agency, of the first dog to climb Mount Everest... and he's super cute!

Rupee the dog, named after the Indian currency, was found by his owner, Ms Lefson, starving in a slum in India. She nursed him back to health before taking him with her on a trek to the Mount Everest Base Camp.

The Mount Everest Base Camp, which sits in the heart of the Himalayas, is 17,000 feet above sea level! Whilst that isn't the top of the mountain, it's believed that Rupee is the first dog that has made it that far.

Ms Lefson was quoted as saying that Rupee is "...a fine example of what can be achieved when a homeless dog is given a second chance."

We think Rupee is one of the cutest dogs we've ever seen - what a hero!

Cat Prank Calls 999

A cat has been causing trouble in Kilburn, Scotland, wasting police time and getting his owner's front door smashed in.

The fantastically named cat, Bruce Lee, is a young pedigree Singapura - one of the smallest breeds of cat in the world and renowned for their playful nature. He was left home alone on Thursday morning and whilst playing with one of his favourite toys - his owner's phone, somehow managed to dial 999, pause briefly and then hang up. Concerned police rushed to the scene, and after they didn't get an answer they smashed the door in only to find the phone on the floor and a scared Bruce hiding in a wardrobe.

Bruce's owner, Mr Cocksbridge, said “Bruce Lee is still in shock. We’ve been cuddling him, rubbing his belly, prodding him, throwing his favourite balls so he can fetch them. He likes that. But we’ve also started to unplug the phone when we’re out. He’s got a cheeky side to him, and he might do it again, although he’d be silly to.”

A police spokeswoman said: “We take all abandoned calls seriously. These calls are typically resolved with a call back from a police operator, confirming the need for police. When call backs are unanswered, checks are carried out, and police will respond to the address where appropriate.”

New Animal-Themed Products by Fred

We've just added a handful of new products, made by our friends at Fred and Friends. You may know that we already stocked a number of Fred's useful-yet-novelty gifts (see them all over on the ZooHood/Fred page here). The new additions are just as cool, kitsch and rather good animal-themed gift ideas.

Animal Origami Place Mats

We absolutely love these guys, and have already been having fun with them ourselves. It's a 50-pack of paper place mats - use them for your dinner and then, when all the food is finished, the mats can be made into animal origami. There are 4 animals to make and each comes with detailed instructions. A great gift and a perfect way to keep the kids entertained at dinner time.

Freakeys - Monster Key Caps

You guys seemed to really enjoy the Monkey Key Caps that we have stocked for a while, so we're really pleased to add the Freakey Monster version too. As key caps, they sit on top of your keys, either to colour-code them or just to make them look hilarious. It's a pack of 6 different monsters, each a different colour with a different facial expression. Possibly the best thing about them is the wiggly arms - like the thumb-puppet toys we all had as a child.

You can find the Freakey Monster Key Caps here: www.zoohood.co.uk/freakeys-monster-key-caps

Octeapus - Octopus Tea Infuser

This last product is a tea infuser that looks like an octopus - an "Octeapus" if you will. The pun probably came before the product was designed, but don't let that fool you - it's a really good quality product and a handy thing in any tea drinker's arsenal. It's made of silicon rubber and the loose tea fits inside the octopus's head. It has one extended tentacle which is used as a stir handle and creeps over the side of the mug.

You can get hold of the Octeapus Tea Infuser here: www.zoohood.co.uk/octeapus-octopus-tea-infuser
